Chapter Twenty-Six

Kate wanted to immediately head over to Chloe Smith’s house, but she knew it could wait. She had a report to make to Olbeck that afternoon, and she’d promised Anderton that she’d try and be home at a reasonable hour that evening. Operation Baby had taken a bit of a back seat over the past week or so, given the excitement of wedding plans. Perhaps that could be remedied tonight. Besides, interviewing a distant witness, possibly someone who’d only probably met the victim a handful of times at most, could be delegated. Martin could do it; it would be good practice for him. Pondering on her next steps, Kate walked back to the office.

The afternoon, in sharp contrast to the morning, flew by. Still no email from Dr Telling, but she had warned Kate that there was a backlog of tests to be processed so… Kate even managed some work on the fraud case before clocking off at the respectable hour of six pm.

“Thought we’d go out to dinner,” Anderton said as Kate arrived home.

“Sounds good to me.” Kate’s cookery skills were not advancing very far or fast. “Where?”

“Somewhere new?”

“Fabulous. You choose. I’ll pay.”

The waitress that served them was a very young, blonde, pretty girl, reminding Kate of her conversation with Jennifer Bellweather earlier that day.

On impulse, Kate said to her, “Excuse me, but is your name Chloe, by any chance?”

The waitress gave her a puzzled look. “No. No, I’m Lily.”

Kate laughed and waved her hand. “Sorry, just ignore me. I got confused for a second. Ignore me.”

The girl gave her a wary smile and hurried away.

“What the hell was that all about?” Anderton was also looking quizzical.

“Work,” said Kate. “Don’t worry about it.”

“You’ve spooked her now. We might never get our food.”

Kate grinned. “Well, let’s see.”

The food did arrive and was uniformly excellent. Kate’s salmon poached in white wine and herbs lay like a pale pink piece of sculpture on a bed of watercress and rocket. She thought for a moment it was almost a shame to eat it, before the delectable steam rising from her dinner meant she put such scruples aside and dug in.

She and Anderton chatted about inconsequential things for a while, enjoying the balmy evening. As twilight began to fall, white fairy lights twinkled on, twined around the fences and beams of the building.

“Why do pubs have so many fairy lights these days?” Anderton asked as he placed his cutlery neatly in the middle of his plate with a sigh of satisfaction.

“It’s a fashion. I like it.”

“It is pretty. Anyway, Kate, I’ve been thinking about the wedding. What do you fancy doing?”

“Getting married,” Kate said with a grin.

“Very funny. I mean, do you want the whole shebang, massive frilly dress, stately home, the works?” Anderton looked slightly hunted as he spoke.

Kate was about to tease him by pretending that that was exactly what she wanted—the more expensive the better!—just to see the look on his face, but she just couldn’t. She shook her head and reached for his hand.
